This is an update from yesterday and today regarding the Nasiru's arrest from the Platform of African Journalists!
Yesterday's update..
*Dear Group members*
Regarding Nasir’s Arrest
Nasir Hassan Yelwa, a journalist and member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), was arrested by the police on Wednesday, while covering a Maulid procession in Abuja.
The procession, organised by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as the Shiite group, was held to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
According to eyewitnesses, Yelwa was invited to cover the peaceful gathering but was arrested by police officers around 2 p.m. in the Apo area of the Federal Capital Territory.
He was taken shortly after covering the event and is currently being detained at the Abattoir facility, the former SARS headquarters.
A source told me today that they were able to locate Nasir at the SARS headquarters in Abuja, and efforts are currently underway to secure his release.
Today's Update...
Thanks for this Ammar.
I spoke with a friend of Nasiru's today. He was able to give me the same update.
I informed them that they must go to the Iran consulate in Abuja to inform them, and get them to engage a lawyer ASAP!
The intention of the police is to keep Nasiru in detention for the weekend. They know that they don't have anything on him. I understand the contact that saw Nasiru at SARS also went with a lawyer.
Therefore the best action is to get the Iranian diplomat in Nigeria involved. The NPF will shit themselves if it becomes a diplomatic issue.
Nasiru's boss in Iran also needs to be informed ASAP !
We continue to keep him in our prayers until he is released. 🙏🏽
