Muslim Parliament Tilts to Peace Initiatives, Urges Dialogue with Bandits, Kidnappers
By Adamu IMAM, Bauchi
The recurrent and ceaseless attacks and killings of innocent citizens, especially in the northern region of the country, have prompted a conglomerate of Ulamas under the auspices of the Muslim Parliament, Bauchi State, to demand that the federal and state governments embrace dialogue as a last resort to end banditry and kidnappings throughout the country.
Speaking at a press conference held at the NUJ Secretariat, Bauchi, the leader of the group, Dr. Engineer Ahmad Yusuf, urged the Nigerian government and other relevant stakeholders to consider any kind of peace initiative to bring an end to the crime and criminality, particularly in areas where people are being held to ransom for no reason.
While briefing journalists on the current insecurity plaguing the northern part of the country, he said that open doors for reconciliation through dialogue are a viable move that would save many lives of Nigerian people in the hands of armed bandits across the country.
The group further stated that "justice to citizens is paramount, hence the need for the government to wake up and address insecurity with all sincerity."
They added that managing any form of insecurity is key to achieving the desired objectives, while maintaining peace and harmony in all affected areas, particularly in the northern region, and that the country's peace cannot be further underrated.
Another member of the group, Dr. Hamza Abubakar, highlighted various peace initiatives executed by previous governments, saying that it's not too late for the Nigerian authority to engage in dialogue with the bandits and have peace of mind, even for once, in the northern region.
He added that this is what prompted them to make their stand known to the federal and state governments to enter into dialogue and agreement with those people for the good of the country.
