The Bauchi State Government has approved ₦75 million for the implementation of Right-of-Way infrastructure projects across the state's border communities, as part of efforts to reduce road accidents and address recurring conflicts between farmers and herders.
The State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Bala Musa Lukshi, made this known during the official flag-off ceremony of the project at Miri village, Bauchi Local Government Area.
He explained that the initiative is designed to create clearly defined corridors for livestock movement, pedestrians, and other users, thereby improving safety on major routes and preventing encroachment on farmlands.
The Commissioner stated that the project would significantly reduce accidents caused by the indiscriminate movement of livestock and pedestrians along highways, while also promoting orderly transportation and rural economic activities.
He noted that the Right-of-Way corridors would serve as a long-term solution to persistent clashes arising from competition over land use and road space.
According to the Commissioner, the project aligns with the broader development agenda of the Bauchi State Government under Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, which prioritizes peacebuilding, infrastructural development, and inclusive growth.
He emphasized that livestock development remains a key sector for the state's economy and that proper infrastructure is essential for its sustainability.
He further disclosed that the government would ensure proper monitoring and community engagement to guarantee the durability and effective utilization of the projects.
Dr. Lukshi stressed that collaboration with traditional institutions, security agencies, and livestock associations would be sustained to maintain peace and protect public investments.
The Commissioner commended Governor Mohammed for his consistent support for reforms in the livestock sector and called on residents, especially communities along the project corridors, to take ownership of the initiative.
He urged the public to cooperate with the government and avoid actions that could undermine the objectives of the project.
Speaking at the event, the Representative of the District Head of Miri, Abubakar Muhammad, described the project as timely and impactful, noting that Miri and surrounding communities have long faced challenges related to road safety and land disputes.
He assured the state government of the traditional institution's commitment to sensitizing community members on peaceful coexistence and the proper use of the Right-of-Way corridors.
Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Livestock, Moses Ayuba Hankali, said the project reflects the administration's proactive approach to addressing security and economic challenges in rural areas.
He emphasized that structured livestock movement would not only reduce conflicts but also enhance productivity and strengthen trust between farmers and herders.
In his remarks, a representative of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Kabiru Yusuf Tilde, pledged the association's full support for the project.
He assured that herders would be sensitized to adhere strictly to the designated routes, adding that the initiative would promote harmony, protect livelihoods, and contribute to lasting peace across Bauchi State.
