Grief is a journey that each person navigates differently. For me, it has always been about preserving memories holding on to the stories, the laughter, and the unmistakable presence of a father who meant everything to me. Though 36 years have passed since his departure, the distance has never diminished the vividness of those moments. I still recall the unique way he called my name, the gentle scent of his presence, his walk, his voice, and even the way he ate. These memories remain my solace and my strength.

Fathers hold a sacred place in our hearts. We call them Dad, Baba, Papa, Abba, or Father but to me, he was simply Iya, the only Iya I ever knew. Over these decades, Iya has remained a constant in my prayers and thoughts. Losing him at the tender age of 12 was painful, yet his love and guidance shaped my life profoundly.

Iya was a father to many, blessed with 41 children from four wives, 21 daughters and 17 sons. Though time has taken some, 33 of his children, 198 grandchildren, and 194 great-grandchildren carry forward his legacy. His life was one of remarkable influence, built on integrity, humility, and dedication.

Family Roots & Early Life

Our family history is one of migration and resilience. From Kano to Takai, then to Dutse Gadawur, and finally to Kirfi in Bauchi, where our forebears answered a call to serve their people. Raised by his great-grandmother Koko after the early loss of his mother, Iya grew up with stories of love and care that stayed with him throughout his life.

He attended Mal. Ali Islamiyya in Wanka and later became one of the first students at the elementary school in Cheledi. His educational journey was remarkable, eventually attending the prestigious Barewa College alongside  Nigerian leaders like Shehu Shagari and Ibrahim Dasuki, friendships that lasted a lifetime.

A Life of Service and Leadership

His career was marked by significant milestones: from scribe at Bauchi Native Authority to membership in the Northern House of Assembly and the Federal House of Representatives, to being one of the first members of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Board of Governors. His signature appeared on Nigeria’s currency in 1958, a testament to his place in history.

He also held key roles in Nigeria’s banking sector and chaired the Nigeria Ports Authority, leaving an indelible mark in public service. Iya’s political journey intertwined closely with iconic leaders, including the late Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Emir of Bauchi Alhaji Adamu Jumba.

A Cherished Family Man

Beyond titles and achievements, Iya was a devoted husband and father. He was a daily presence in our lives, a source of unconditional love and support. Our home was filled with laughter, warmth, and the occasional joyful chaos of a large family. His role extended beyond fatherhood, he was a teacher, a mentor, a friend.

I vividly remember the day he passed, July 2 1989, a day heavy with sorrow but also profound gratitude for the years we had. Even now, I cherish the lessons he imparted: integrity is more precious than wealth; love must be spoken and shown; family is everything.

A Legacy of Love and Gratitude

This tribute also honors the fathers who shaped my life beyond Iya; friends, mentors, and neighbors whose love helped guide me through life’s challenges. To all fathers worldwide who nurture and care for their children, your impact is immeasurable.

Though 36 years have passed, my father’s spirit lives on in our family, our community, and in my heart.

With eternal love and remembrance, Hajara Yakubu Wanka July 2, 2025
