Bauchi Teenager Seeks N1.5m for Spinal Cord Surgery

By Adamu IMAM, Bauchi

Seven weeks ago, a Bauchi Teenager seeking help for surgery of his spinal cord from Gungun Rimi community of Tafawa Balewa local government area of Bauchi State, Musa Muhammad Kabir's world was shattered in an instant.

13 year old young Musa's parents are poor and are struggling to make ends meet, and the weight of uncertainty for the survival of their child hung heavy.

More worrisome is, Musa's father is a poor health attendant at Gwashe Dispensary also in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi state with no financial capacity to cough up one and a half million Naira expected to foot the medical bills for his child to survive.

The mother, Malama Jamila Muhammad Kabir who spoke to our Correspondent, said her son Musa fell off a mango tree and was left with serious cervical injuries that require emergency medical interventions to save him from being permanently paralyzed or sudden death.

According to her, the dreams of her son to become someone helpful to the family, his community and Nigeria at large are obviously slipping away, having diagnosed with the spinal cord injuries.

She said, the road to her son's recovery seemed break and daunting with medical bills piling up following their poor financial standing.

As it is, Musa is lying down hopelessly at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Bauchi waiting for a would be kind-hearted individuals or organization for interventions to enable him to access the surgery he is supposed to undergo.

Malama Jamila Kabir added that it took the compassionate support from some kind individuals including medical workers to enable them to conduct some tests, X-ray, have some medical equipment and to access some drugs.

Jamila Kabir regretted that for the past six weeks they have been on admission, her husband (Musa's father) could not show up because he could not afford the financial obligations.

She therefore appealed to the Tafawa Balewa local government council, Bauchi state government, Senator representing Bauchi-South Senatorial District, Shehu Umar Buba, other spirited individuals and organisations to come to their rescue.

According to her, as a poor family, they struggle to feed and take care of the ailing Musa and they have exhausted everything. She seldomly said they are left with no option than to seek assistance from government, spirited individuals and organizations.

The thirteen year old Musa who is supposed to be in JSS II, with tears flowing down his chins, said his present condition had hindered him from continuing with his studies while his mates are there attending classes.

On seeing Musa, patients whose conditions are of minor health challenges could feel healed as the saying goes "where greater malady prevails the lesser ones are scarce felt".
